We love cake shops here at FriedChillies. So of course we were very happy to check out Jaslyn Cakes. Just half a shoplot, this sweet little place smells heavenly the moment you step in. Lovely…
” Sugar, spice, all so nice.”
Bangsar is no stranger to good eats. Now we can add desserts and pastries to that list because Jaslyn Cakes serves up some of the tastiest baked goodies in town. Jaslyn Cakes opened in 2014. Owner, the softly spoken Jaslyn Rangson, honed her baking and pastry skills from famed culinary school Le Cordon Bleu in London when she was over there. Before opening the shop though she also supplied various baked goodies to several shops in Kuala Lumpur. Now her namesake cafe fills up most of her time! She stresses the fact that her shop uses premium ingredients and always organic whenever possible
The shop itself is a cosy half-lot along ever busy Jalan Telawi 2. The interior is very quaint and homey if a bit tight on space. The kitchen itself is smack in the middle of the shop, complete with a giant stand mixer.
So you get to watch your cake being made and eat it too. The smells emanating from this place are incredible: warm and comforting with the scent of vanilla, honey and chocolate. But by this time you’ve forgotten the smells because all eyes are on the gorgeous display of cakes and pastries on the counter. Sweet-tooths, you’re in for a treat because choices are aplenty here. But to make choosing easier for you folk, here are the highlights.
Jaslyn’s Carrot Cake is scrumptious as well. The icing was a bit sweet, but the carrot flavour really shone in the tender cake batter and toasted pecans gave a pleasant and welcome crunch to it.
The Pavlova is awesome: a crisp on the outside but fluffy on the inside meringue is married to a luscious cream and topped with strawberries. The textures are lovely and the flavours not too sweet or cloying. Chocolate Chip or Raisin Oatmeal cookies were exemplary as well, getting that mix of chewiness and crunch just right. It helped too that they were loaded with chocolate chips and raisins, respectively. Great to nibble with a cup of tea (of which they have a great selection!).
Sweet Jaslyn herself amongst her cakes surrounded by cookies, pavlova and custardy donuts.
And what’s a cake shop without something chocolate, right? The bestselling Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake is rich and oh-so-dreamy in its chocolatey goodness, and the peanut butter icing really brings the whole thing together. It’s like the best flavours of a candy bar in cake form.
We saved the best for last though: the Custard Donuts are perfectly round and perfectly burnished a lovely deep mahogany.
Order one of these and the good blessed folk of Jaslyn Cakes injects – YES, INJECTS – the doughtnut with a custard so smooth, so delicious and pock-marked with specks of real vanilla. Simple but damn good.
P/S: You can order their cakes for functions too!
