Grub, an unassuming joint in Seksyen 17 is getting people in their doors by serving no frills steaks and western comfort food. Helmed by Ah Hong, his philosophy is simple, cut out as much overheads as you can and give it all back to the diners in food. We just love that he’s getting people to eat good food, his way…

Ah Hong owns Grub and is a magician. He makes the impossible… possible. His steaks are succulent, juicy, tender, well-spiced and prices start at RM39 for a sit down dinner. That’s the magic. He works hard so that Malaysians can afford a great steak experience. Thank you bro!

Grub the restaurant looks like an upmarket kopitiam. We like. Always full, if you come for dinner… better have a reservation. Why? Lets start with their striploin. One of our favourites.

Striploin is best medium and here its done to perfection. Well-charred on the outside, lovely pink inside. Very juicy and tender as they really use the best cuts they can afford. And Ah Hong being an architect who used to work in London and enjoys a weekly steak, has honed his cooking and passion into this dish you will now want to eat after reading this FriedChillies review.

Hello beautiful…
Wagyu… 90 bucks? Where can find like this one? Same thing… well charred outside… lovely pink inside. It might be a tad too bloody for some so just order it medium if you are that kind of person. It’s the simplicity in the cooking that is the hardest to master. We really enjoyed this one too.

All their steaks come with a simple jambu ulam (gwailow say salad lah) that is just a perfect match for the steaks. Crisp jambu air slivers with greens in a nice oniony-vinegery dressing.
We did say that this is a sit down restaurant, right? This is how it works ah. Go find table, check table number, fill in paper (like kopitiam), go downstairs give cashier, wait for order receipt and then go back and sit down at your table. Drinks, utensils, ice take from drinks rack. It’s DIY, his servers just send your grub over and don’t expect them to know if it’s striploin or rib-eye, it’s all ‘steak’ to them. Just accept your plate and enjoy. That’s how he’s keeping his cost down for you. Like IKEA. Don’t understand? See the fat guy running around in the kitchen. Don’t worry… he don’t bite. Nice guy.

There are other good things on this menu too like the beetroot salad, lamb and clam which is lamb chop with with ramen in a clam broth (an Ah Hong surf ‘n’ turf?) and for those who like it simple, there’s a decent roast chicken with mash too. However, do start with the steaks and work your way through the menu from there.

Lastly but not least, this steak place has a hidden gem. Wanna know what? Try their Fried Quails too. That’s all we’re saying.
