If you need a straight up good seafood joint with no fuss and no muss dishes, this place is the real deal! It just serves up honest and good Ikan Bakar with powerful sambal on the side…
” Ikan here, ikan there, ikan everywhere!!! ”
After about an hour’s drive from KL to Kuala Selangor, we arrived at Aroma Ikan Bakar, a famous Malay seaside seafood place. What’s really good here is their ikan bakar that is sourced from Kuala Selangor and surrounding provinces. They have a great bakar pit where the ikan grill masters cook up an assortment of fishes and bring out the natural flavours in them.
But sometimes, people come here and they are not satisfied. Now why is that? As we said, Aroma Ikan Bakar are expert fish grillers. Their kitchen menu like Tom Yam, Ikan Tiga Rasa etc… other places seem to be better. So come for what they are good for- Ikan Bakar and evening scenery by the beach.
You start by choosing what you want to have for dinner. A selection full of fishes from ikan susu, tongkol, kembung, siakap, garoupa and other stuff like kerang, ketam bunga, mussels and more. Market prices are displayed so you know roughtly what you are paying for.
Our recommendation is just to have them all grilled either plain or with their sambal slapped on. Then, have them with some plain rice and perhaps kangkong belacan. This way, you enjoy the ikan bakar without too many complex flavours disturbing that nice ikan bakar taste. Get it?
The kerang bakar is a must. Grilled plain over charcoal flame, this is very delicious eaten just like that… like an appetizer… with their air assam or sambal kicap. Fishes are grilled crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. The kembung and pari bakar gets a nice sambal coat before it goes on the charcoal grill giving it a nice caramelised bakar flavour.
The Ikan Gerut is great too. It has a nice sweet taste and it’s cheaper than the more popular Jenahak or Garoupa. Unfortunately, Aroma prefers not to descale their fish before bakar, so whilst the flesh is perfect… we missed out on the delicous crispy skin because the scales got in the way.
Nice views! Need to book early. If you stick to the ikan bakar, you’ll have a great dining experience. Food’s cheap(er) though. Ikan Gerut, Kembung, Kerang, Udang, Pari, Sotong, Rice for 4, Kangkong Belacan and One Jug of Drinks… RM150!
