Nasi Lemak Wanjo

For our nasi lemak Monday today we present you one of the stalwarts of Kampung Baru nasi lemak. Housed in a blue stall, the highlight here is the deep, red, sweet sambal that will surely perk up your day.

Sweet, smoky sambal here!

Nasi Lemak Wanjo, called in turns Mak Wanjor for the matriarch of the family until the sign came up on their shop recently; serves a good, solid nasi lemak. For those of you that like your sambal a little sweet, this is the place for you. It’s still spicy but there’s a sultry sweetness that runs through it and a smokiness that gives it character.

Hot, sweet and deep

Paired with their ‘ceroi’ nasi lemak it’s definitely one to check out if you are in Kampung Baru. They open early, have a break in the afternoon then reopens at about 4 until late night. Each nasi lemak ‘biasa’ comes with a whole egg and you can either choose boiled or bullseye.

Paru is highly recommended

Lauk-wise paru here is a must try, soft and delicious. They also do limpa, a decent sambal sotong, rendang, bergedel and fried chicken. Fried chicken here is a little hard, okaylah if you like more protein with your nasi lemak.

A nasi lemak biasa at Wanjo

Nasi lemak Wanjo has been plying their trade for over 40 years. They started out as a modest stall and now has an actual lot with tables and chairs. They are easy to find being right next to the infamous Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa. Prices have gone up recently to about RM3 for a normal nasi lemak but you do get a whole egg and the sambal is pretty wicked. There are queues in the morning but service is fast and usually with a smile.

Sambal lebih kak!
