There used to be long queues at the Wong Soon Kee coffeeship but how Lim Fried Chicken have expanded to a few shops where you can get a serving of their crispy, juicy thighs in no time. Let’s check it out…
” Crispy thighs served with rice or chee cheong fun! ”
Lim’s Fried Chicken has grown from its humble original location in Subang Jaya SS14’s Wong Soon Kee coffee shop (sometimes erroneously referred to as Wong Soon Kee fried chicken) to a chain of 5 restaurants located throughout northern KL. The now famous Lim Fried Chicken was originally only served from 2pm – 6pm at the stall, an odd time considering it’s after lunch hour but that did not stop devoted foodies from forming daily queues to take away packs of hot, piping fried chicken with a choice of either rice with sambal or curry chee cheong fun (another curious combination).
Famed for their freshly fried and crispy fried chicken (only drumsticks are served), it was only a matter of time before demand outgrew supply and LFC finally moved out from their humble beginnings and opened up their own outlet in SS15. Expansion quickly followed, there’s currently 5 LFC branches. Is this a good thing? We made a visit to the SS2 outlet to find out.
Located on a row of shoplots facing the main road, finding the restaurant was relatively easy. Parking is another matter altogether especially during lunch hour, we’d advise turning up slightly earlier or later after the lunch rush. The menu have not changed much although now there’s a couple of additional items (curry chicken and kampung fish??) but we’re here for the main event: the signature Lim’s Fried chicken drumstick served with either white rice (curiously not nasi lemak) and a sweet sambal sauce or chee cheong fun (choose from curry or sweet sauce, we recommend the curry) and vegetables of long beans or cabbage. Add a fried egg on top if you really want to give your arteries a real workout.
Service was quick and we got our food within 5 minutes, unheard of when queues of 30 minutes or upwards is the norm back in the Wong Soon Kee days.
Salty on just the right side and with a crispy skin, the fried chicken was fresh and is a perfect accompaniment to the rice we ordered. While we recall that the drumsticks used to be bigger in size, the taste remains the same: wrapped in a salty crispy skin (the way I like it), the meat was cooked well without being too oily.
The secret to great fried chicken is the batter, fresh chickens and the right cooking oil and frying temperature and LFC’s version while not the best, is definitely one of the better options available for those who are not keen on the fast food variety. However the vegetable and rice that came with the dish was cold and for sambal lovers accustomed to the spicy variety, the sweet variation serve here might not be to your liking and you might want to ask for the sambal to be served separately. There is also the chee cheong fun version if you are more noodle inclined.
If for any reasons you’re not really feeling fried chicken for the day, the curry mutton or sambal sotong are also good options. Or add-ons if you’re in a group or have a big appetite.
