Nasi Lemak is a whole different thing in the Northern parts of Malaysia, it’s not your usual coconut rice but more a union of Nasi Lemak and Nasi Minyak. It has a very distinctive aroma, campuq with the kuah and lauk, lagi syahdu.

The late Haji Ali started out in 1958 by opening a small warong near the UMNO building in Alor Setar, Kedah. Using family recipes he brought with him from India such as the Ayam Marican, Daging Rose and Sotong Pedas, it instantly became the “go to” spot for the locals and it’s no surprise why. He has brought something new to the locals at that time and they are hooked on it. Now run by his children and grandchildren, Nasi Lemak Haji Ali has expanded to Shah Alam and Kota Damansara. Guess we don’t have to drive all the way to Kedah now, so Kedahans rejoice!
There’s quite a number of lauk you can choose from but one of my lauk wajib has to be the Ayam Marican. It’s deep fried chicken smothered with hot and spicy and dark sauce, that makes you salivate for more even though your tongue and lips are burning from the spices.
Keep a sharp eye whenever you order your nasi and see how they mix the kuah so efficiently, he makes sure everything is well balanced and nothing overpowers each other but compliments instead.
Besides that you have to get your hands on the Sotong Pedas, which is macam Sotong Dry Curry. The thick curry like sauce coats the sotong generously and the sotong is so tender it just melts in your mouth.
Lastly the Ayam Bawang, how can a dish as simple as this be so so good? Macam ayam goreng on steroids, it’s coated evenly with just a few types of spices but packs a punch macam Badang! If you miss out on this, rugi… believe me.
