Nasi Lemak Ujang Corner

When a nasi lemak stall serves 100kg of rice a day, you can bet they’re on to something good. And boy, does this place take the cake for some wonderfully prepared and stunningly delicious nasi lemak. No wonder they’ve been around 30 years!

100 kilograms of rice a day!

Imagine going through 100 kilograms of rice each day. ONE HUNDRED KILOGRAMS. That’s a whole lotta rice! Yet, that’s exactly the amount of rice Nasi Lemak Ujang corner goes through in a day. Read that right? A DAY. That means 700kg of rice a week, at least! With good reason, though. This unassuming stall, which has been in operation for 30 years (and now with branches too!), was started at Medan Selera Taman Greenwood by Pn. Juairiah Mohd Sharif, and is now run by her amiable daughter, Pn. Nora. That’s some longevity, huh?

So what makes the nasi lemak special? It’s the rice, naturally. The rice is soaked, par-cooked by steaming, cooled, then steamed again before the coconut milk is added. The result? A crumbly, fragrant, deliciously coconut-ty and nutty rice that pairs wonderful with their range of lauk.

The soft, fragrant lovingly cooked rice

The story is, Pn. Nora’s husband one day who is very passionate about nasi lemak, wanted to start his own business. So he apprenticed with his mother-in-law for a year to get the secret of nasi lemak kukus. Then he convinced his wife to give up her day job and sell nasi lemak with him. The road has not been easy but with tenacity and hard work, they now own another branch in Selayang and business is booming!

Go for the basics: their sambal is thick with chili and onions, and is a luxurious, unctious version of this compulsory accompaniment. The flavours are deep and rich, and not too spicy either so you can enjoy this without scalding your tongue.

Don’t forget to try their lauks as well; they have quite a wide array, from ayam goreng, to various sambals (sotong being wonderful!) and rendangs. They’re all worth it.

Nasi Lemak Ujang Corner has been around 30 years, plus-minus. They’re gonna be around for the next 30, too, judging by their nasi lemak. And probably serving more than 100kg a day!
